Anyhoo...
So while I am procrastinating, I thought I'd give you a bit of that other thing I've procrastinated,
Vacation photos!
When I last left you, I was barreling down 95, ready to unleash my children and husband on Virginia. After twelve hours, and some very bad GPS directions, we finally landed at the Great Wolf Lodge....
...which let me just say, if you have kids and haven't gone, is TOTALLY worth the money. It's a themed hotel with a family atmosphere. Outside you'll find several pools, mini golf, and a walk up eatery/bar. Inside, downstairs they have "Main Street" where you'll find an arcade, 3-D motion ride, half sized bowling alley, ice cream and fudge shop, take out pizza place, 3-D video shooting game, and Scoops... the kid's ice cream themed spa.
Oh, and did I forget? They have an entire water park inside the hotel. It's like a vacation inside a vacation, people!
See that last one? The funnel-y looking one? That's a family ride. The raft is shaped like a four leaf clover and four people can ride down together. Care to ask who went down holding on for dear life, eyes screwed shut, screaming the entire way... backwards? No? Okay... never mind then. (It was me. I tell the kids that my misery adds to their enjoyment. Apparently it added to everyone's enjoyment as the funnel has very good acoustics my screaming could have woke the dead.)
We stayed two days. The kids could have stayed the entire week. So, I booked another stay at the brand new one by us in a few months. I'm telling you, it's a great time. And no one is paying me to say that either, or giving me a discount, as I had to pay full price for my room in Fitchberg. (Although, I'd totally love it, since I am actually getting several rooms booked for them as we make a kid-a-palooza trip of it. Who says I'm not the cool mom?)
Moving on...
So, we checked in and hit the water park the first day. The second day we headed here...
And while this part of the vacation was definitely for the kids, I must say, the park is beautiful and immaculate. The park is separated into countries and each section is themed within that country. We planned to have lunch in Germany, timed of course with Oktoberfest, in which German dancers and musicians come out to dance and sing while you eat. Youngest was thrilled that they had gluten free pizza, and the German themed food was delicious.
That's my husband waving to ya... |
The kids rode all the big coasters. That's them, in the back row on the Griffon. Waiting to be plummeted to the ground at 71 mph...
Tony and I stayed on the ground. Because we're giant wusses.
After the Gardens, we headed back to the hotel, hit the water park again, did some bowling, and grabbed some dinner. Day three found the kids down in the arcade in the morning, but by 10 am we were on the road again to Jamestown. Again, our GPS redirected us the long way, through some wilderness preservation areas and downtown Williamsburg which was beautiful. I almost wish I had let Tony drive so I could take pictures.
Jamestown is a settlement built in the 1600's and is quite similar to Plimouth Plantation here by us. The cool part about Jamestown is the straight forward answers from the characters there, as the ones at the Plantation have to stay in period all the time and it is difficult to get a real, clear, understandable answer from them.
There is also a water front area where they had many antique tools for navigating the seas and some very informative staff. Who knew that the term nautical knots came from literally dropping a rope with knots into the water?
After Jamestown we headed north to Spotsylvania....
...which will have to wait until later as the things I can no longer put off are (literally) calling my name. Plus, I think the bread's done rising and I'll have to bring it in before it ruins my upholstery.
Julie, my niece is having her wedding reception at the Lodge! Same one in VA. We have yet to make reservations since the wedding is December 19th! Horrible time of year for us what with CHRISTMAS and all. Sigh. I think we are going to just drive up and then back with maybe 2 nights stay at a cheaper place. (This is Karen aka Portia)
ReplyDeleteOH!! It will have a snow theme then! How pretty! Yeah... a different hotel may be a good plan. If you are not going with the grands, it is a very kid active place... think scavenger hunt through the hotel at all hours of the day... but not if it's just the two of you. My parents did have an issue with the noise and pitter patter THUMP!! of kids everywhere... even at 10pm. It seems that even with 7 grand kids they can't tune it out anymore. :)
DeleteWe have a Great Wolf Lodge in Washington (I'm in Oregon) and while taking my family would be crazy expensive, I feel it's something we MUST do, at least once. I'm glad you said it was worth it, that helps. (:
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a great time!
Look for Groupons for it. I got the room for 6 for $250 a night. The one by us (brand new) just had one up for the same room for $200 a night (of course not the dates I needed) AND if you think that a family of four would cost $130 a day for a water park, and you're getting TWO days of the water park for a one night stay, it also lessens the blow. Good luck!!
DeleteAlso, if you book and a better deal pops up, you can call them and they will honor it. :)
DeleteThanks for taking me on vacation with you. Loved it! ISYN! (((hugs)))
ReplyDeleteGool trip thus far. Took me a bit to find your hubby's disembodied arm waving, though.
ReplyDeleteYOU are gonna LOVE days 3 and 4... no disembodied arms though... well, maybe... I'll have to check. :)
DeleteI believe you are right. The word "Spotsylvania" is not lost on me.
DeleteJamestown doesn't look like it has changed much since I was there in the 70's.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you guys had fun!
ReplyDeleteThat lodge is nice. You can have fun even if it rains. Favorite Young Man and Beatrix Skiddo went to Busch Gardens here in Florida. They had a great time. I would not go on that funnel thingy. No way. You are very brave. In that photo of you and Tony, is he trying to mount you? He looks kind of like a big dog who hasn't been fixed, and he's finally found a female in heat. I let my bread dough rise in the microwave after I heat some water in it. The dough loves that warm, moist atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
My microwave is too small... I did try that. The car worked perfectly, the bread came out a bit grainy (as does a lot of gluten free) but I'm hoping once it becomes french toast it is delicious.
DeleteI think he was just trying to make me crazy. He does that a lot.
Oooh! I'm kinda thinking I could coerce my almost 20 year old to go the Great Wolf Lodge in Charlotte....maybe.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I took my son to Jamestown/Williamsburg - it was a pain in the rear to get there and we didn't have a GPS to help. I LOVED Williamsburg. His elementary school self didn't enjoy it as much. He preferred the amusement park.
Ok I have a splitting headache this morning so instead of reading I scrolled through the pictures and went ohh and arr and wow because the photos are just so bloody great
ReplyDeleteThere's a Great Wolf Lodge here in the Poconos. Gotta admit...not a big fan. My daughter and my wife LOVED it, but my son and I? Meh. I think my sister-in-law put her finger on it when she called it a "super chlorinated petri dish of humanity." That being said, I love water parks (Water Country USA in Williamsburg is a favorite). Great Wolf Lodge just skeeved me. LOVE Busch Gardens! My favorite ride is Apollo's Chariot, but there's hardly a clunker in the whole park. I remember when it first opened and the Loch Ness Monster was THE roller coaster. Still a fun ride but, compared to the others? Meh. Did you go to the original Jamestown settlement (without the ship and reenactors)? Way spooky. In any case, glad you had a great time. My son has a season pass to Busch Gardens (since he lives in Norfolk now). He loves it there.
ReplyDeleteLooked like a great trip! I think I would have spent the majority of the tme at the water park, how cool is that at a hotel! You got brave boys to ride the roller coasters! I'm with you and Tony, safer on the ground I think! Thanks for sharing your pictures with us; seeing how we didn't do a vacation this year, it is fun to see the vacations others took :)
ReplyDeletebetty
I don't even want to know what the GWL cost per night, plus extras. It does look insane tho'.
ReplyDeleteI was really surprised by your comment that you couldn't get a clear answer from the re enactors in Jamestown. What? They didn't give you any answer you could correct? giggle
For the 6 times we went with each of the kids [the extra one was a family trip] we were always answer succinctly and we learned something more each time. Which is surprising after how many times we had gone. The center in the front is much nicer now than when the older kids were young [it's a must do third grade trip for all Virginian children living within driving distance] as they redid it for their anniversary of the landing at Jamestown and the Queen of England was making a visit.
I still can't believe you were less than 45 minutes from our house and I was miles away in another county [our old one.] Ah well.
